Calculate Your BMI

Is your neck circumference greater than 17” (male) or 16” (female)?

Why We Ask This

While we recognize the limitations of BMI as a single data point, it can be helpful as a generalized indicator for your likelihood of having obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

While the exact relationship between BMI and sleep apnea is difficult to define, it is clear that a higher BMI is considered a major risk factor for sleep apnea.

Additionally, a neck circumference over 17"/43cm for men or 16"/41cm for women can be a risk factor for OSA.

Your sex at birth is also important, since people who are biologically male are more likely to have OSA compared to those who are biologically female.

Why We Ask This

Increased daytime sleepiness is a common symptom of sleep apnea, though there are many potential causes.

Have you been told that you stop breathing during sleep or wake up gasping for air?

Yes
No

Why We Ask This

Waking up gasping for air or experiencing complete stoppages of breathing during sleep are both strong indicators of obstructive sleep apnea.

Do you have (or are you taking medicine for) high blood pressure?

Yes
No

Why We Ask This

Sleep apnea has a significant impact on blood pressure. Research has shown that up to half of the population with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has hypertension, and up to 30% of the population with hypertension has OSA.

Why We Ask This

Snoring alone is not a definitive sign of sleep apnea, but frequent, loud snoring is a stronger indicator.
