Finding a CPAP mask that fits just right can make all the difference in your sleep apnea journey. In the past, masks were known for being bulky and uncomfortable, but designs have improved a lot since then and now it's easier than ever to stick with CPAP therapy

We recently put one of these new masks to the test—ResMed AirFit F40 Full Face Mask. As you'll see in today's AirFit F40 review, this mask has a lot going for it. It offers the dependability of the AirFit F20 with a compact under-the-nose cushion and a fit that works for just about everyone.

  • Seal quality and security

  • Fitting process, adjustability, and sizing options

  • User-friendliness and sound quality

  • Cost of ownership and maintenance

AdaptiSeal™ Cushion: Flexible silicone cushion automatically conforms to your face shape and size, creating a seal that holds even at 20 cmH2O.

Over the past two weeks, our team took time to review the AirFit F40 for ourselves. Overall we were really impressed with the quality of the materials and the effectiveness of the comfort features.

At the end of the review process, our team scored the mask by considering 10 different categories including fit, user-friendliness, seal quality, cost, and more. Ultimately the F40 received a total of 87.3 out of 100 possible points (10 points per category). Additionally, our team slept with the mask in a variety of positions and pressure levels to test the mask's comfort and seal quality.

Seal quality

9.75/10

The mask seal took us by surprise! At lower pressures (5–10 cmH2O), it achieved a flawless seal with minimal adjustments, making it ideal for back and side sleepers. The AdaptiSeal cushion stayed secure even as we changed positions, while the flexible frame and headgear added to its stability.

Even at higher pressures (15–20 cmH2O), the mask stayed leak-free, maintaining an impressive seal score of 9.5/10, even during movement. One small note: at pressures above 12–15 cmH2O, tighter headgear adjustments were needed to prevent small leaks. This occasionally left facial marks by morning.

Overall, we give the seal performance a stellar 9.75/10, making it one of the top full-face masks we've tested when it comes to avoiding air leaks.

Comfort

7.5/10

The AirFit F40 was easy to sleep in thanks to its soft silicone cushion. The nasal cradle is especially gentle, reducing irritation compared to many nasal cradle masks. Overall, the AirFit F40 delivers excellent comfort for a full-face mask, earning a solid 7.5/10.

At higher pressures (above 12–15 cmH2O), tightening the headgear may cause some red marks or soreness across the nose. Choosing a larger cushion size can help with this. While the frame is well-designed, a mask with a more shallow side profile would probably make this mask more comfortable for side and belly sleepers.

Fitting

9/10

Fitting the AirFit F40 is simple. We found it easy to achieve the right settings and were surprised to find that a slightly looser fit still held a strong seal. Based on the sizing chart, medium worked best for our testers, while we struggled with leaks at higher pressures when wearing the small-medium size.

The quick and easy fitting process and adjustable design make for a hassle-free experience even if it's your first time setting up a CPAP mask. Thanks to the flexible frame and AdaptiSeal cushion, even small tweaks keep the seal secure, making setup a stress-free experience.

Adjustability

8.5/10

The AirFit F40 stands out for its impressive adjustability, offering adjustment tabs that are easy to use. While a top-of-the-head strap could provide an even more tailored fit, the range of headgear sizes makes this a minor concern. We really liked how the upper fit tabs sit lower than traditional designs, which makes them easier to reach for people who experience dexterity issues.

Though it may not be the best option for users with limited mobility above the head, the F40 headgear is easy to adjust for most people. It also offers a set-it-and-forget-it feature, which is made possible with the mask's magnetic clips located on either side of the cushion. Once fitted, the velcro straps stay in place even after a full night's sleep, so once your fit tabs have been adjusted, you .

Security

10/10

The F40 delivers exceptional security, staying firmly in place even during active sleep and high-pressure settings (15–20 cmH2O). Its headgear design prevents slipping, and the flexible frame moves with you, so once you've fitted your mask, it actually stays there all night.

The magnetic clips provide reliable attachment when secured correctly. Once adjusted, the fit remains consistent night after night, eliminating the need for frequent readjustments. It is worth noting that while the magnetic clips are really helpful, they should not be used if you have a pacemaker or other medical implant.

Thanks to its rock-solid stability, we rate the F40’s security a perfect 10/10—one of the most dependable masks we’ve tested.

User-Friendliness

8.5/10

Like most ResMed masks, this one is pretty user-friendly, with intuitive features that make it easy to handle. The adjustment points are easy to reach, making quick modifications—even during the night—simple and stress-free.

Disassembly and reassembly are also straightforward, although the process is slightly more involved than with simpler masks, like the AirFit N30 or P10. The silicone cushion snaps gently into the frame, and the familiar headgear adds to the experience. While the new vent ring may take a minute to get used to, it’s not overly difficult to push in and out.

What stands out most is how well the F40 maintains its settings over time. Like ResMed's other full face masks, the F40 features fit-it-and-forget-it magnetic clips that hold your fit tabs in place even when you take the mask off. Once fitted, the straps stay consistent, even after cleaning.

Maintenance

8.5/10

This mask is easy to clean and maintain. It can be disassembled or reassembled in just seconds. So you can clean your mask first thing in the morning as part of your daily routine. Simply slip the vent ring into the cushion then loop the head straps into the frame.

Daily cleaning is quick—wipe the cushion with a CPAP wipe or wash with mild soap and water. For weekly deep cleaning, the mask comes apart easily for thorough care. Vent holes require some attention but are accessible and manageable.

The mask holds its shape and fits well after repeated cleanings, with a durable silicone cushion and elastic headgear. Overall, we rate its maintenance a solid 8.5/10 for ease and reliability.

Field of view

10/10

The AirFit F40 offers an exceptional field of view. Its ultra-compact design and under-the-nose cushion keep the frame below your line of sight, making it easy to read or watch TV before bed. Even glasses fit comfortably without interference.

The slimmed-down profile minimizes feelings of claustrophobia, maintaining an open line of sight that keeps you from feeling overwhelmed or suffocated. For a full-face mask, the F40’s field of view earns a perfect 10/10—maximum visibility without sacrificing seal quality.

Cost of ownership

6/10

The AirFit F40 offers moderate cost of ownership. While its initial price is higher than some competitors, its durable components help offset costs over time. With proper care, the cushion and headgear maintain their integrity well, following the standard CPAP mask replacement schedule.

Here’s a quick breakdown of estimated annual costs:

  • Initial purchase: $155 (premium price range)
  • Cushion replacement: $54 every 1–3 months
  • Headgear replacement: $34 every 6 months
  • Full replacement: $155 annually

To maximize your savings, check out subscription-based CPAP supplies or stock up during sale events. Overall, we rate the cost of ownership 6/10, reflecting its premium pricing and solid durability.

Sizing options

9.5/10

The AirFit F40 offers three cushion sizes, providing customizable options for various face shapes.

  • Small-wide
  • Medium
  • Large
The medium works best for most people, while the small-wide suits those with smaller faces or a shorter distance between the nose and the mouth, even for wider faces. The large offers more coverage for longer faces or less tightening at higher pressures.

Headgear is also available in three sizes:

  • Small
  • Standard
  • Large

The standard fit our testers well, and the range of options ensures a personalized, comfortable fit without over-tightening. With this many sizing options, it's easy to find the perfect fit for your needs.

If you are new to the AirFit F40, we suggest purchasing the AirFit F40 Starter Pack, which comes with a standard mask frame with all three cushion sizes. If you would like to buy a regular mask without the extra cushions, we suggest confirming your size with the AirFit F40 Sizing Guide.

How does the AirFit F40 hold up to different sleeping preferences?

Our team knows that a comfortable mask goes beyond the design features. The best CPAP masks should be quiet and easy to fall asleep in. So, to round out our AirFit F40 review, our testers wore this mask in a variety of sleeping positions and pressure settings.

Illustration showing how the AirFit F40 Full Face CPAP Mask performs across different sleep styles and pressure settings. Categories include back sleeping, belly sleeping, side sleeping, and active sleeping, rated from perfect to uncomfortable with color-coded indicators for pressure levels ranging from 5 cm H2O to 20 cm H2O

Sleeping positions

This mask is really comfortable for back and side sleepers, regardless of the pressure setting. The F40 has a swiveling short tube, making it a good fit for semi-active sleepers who tend to move around while they're getting comfortable before falling asleep.

For back and side sleeping at lower pressures (5–10 cmH2O), we rate it a perfect 10/10. At higher pressures (15–20 cmH2O), comfort slightly dips to 9.5/10 due to the need for tighter adjustments.

Stomach sleeping is possible but may require repositioning the mask to get comfy, otherwise you may experience discomfort due to the pressure this position can put on your sinuses while sleeping with a CPAP machine. If you're a very active sleeper or you lay on your belly a lot, we suggest going with a mask that holds the tube at the top of the head, for example, the AirFit F30i.

Noise level

We were honestly shocked at how quiet this mask was, especially as a full face mask, as those are traditionally louder than other styles. It was nearly silent at 5 cmH2O, with only occasional sound coming from the CPAP machine. Even at 10 cmH2O, the noise remained practically unnoticeable.

But what really impressed us most was the F40's performance at higher pressures. At 15 cmH2O, it stayed remarkably quiet with minimal tightening. And by 20 cmH2O, the noise was still exceptionally quiet.

It's safe to say the QuietAir vents are doing their job and then some! The AirFit F40 is a game-changer if you want a quiet full face mask.

Alternatives to the AirFit F40

While the F40 is a great pick, it may not be right for everyone. If you're still looking for the perfect mask for you, here are a few to consider:

  • AirFit N30 or P10: A minimalist design with QuietAir technology. Must be able to breathe through your nose.
  • AirFit F30i: A full face mask with a top-of-the-head hose connection that is perfect for active sleepers and stomach sleepers.
  • Evora Full Face: A mask that works very similarly to the AirFit F40, but with extra velcro adjustments across the top of the head.
