We’ve uncovered the most – and least – sleep-friendly metro rail systems internationally based on a variety of factors, such as number of stations, busiest lines, on-time operation, accessibility to air conditioning within stations and cars, bathroom accessibility, cleanliness, WiFi availability, city quality of life, and more to find out which metro rail systems offer the highest level of comfortability when it comes to relaxation before commuting or traveling to a new part of the city.
The World's Top 20 Sleep-Friendly Metro Rail Systems
Sticking to a set bedtime during the week is easier said than done when all of life’s demands get in the way, and plenty of us need to be up and at ‘em at early hours. Relying on public transport to commute can be quite stressful, so we identified and ranked the most sleep-friendly metro systems globally to help you relax before a busy work day.
Surprisingly, or not, the most sleep-friendly metro system isn’t located in the U.S. — the Sydney Metro in Australia takes the top spot, offering passengers the best amenities when it comes to getting some rest. Sydney’s Metro has 98% cleanliness and 92% customer satisfaction ratings. Beyond having a stellar cleanliness rate across cars and an impeccably high customer satisfaction rate, the metro also provides passengers with air conditioning in stations and cars, WiFi, and bathroom accessibility. Servicing nearly 23.3 million riders annually across 24 stations, passengers are sure to be kept comfortable while riding.
Globally, the TTC in Toronto, Canada, ranks as the second most sleep-friendly metro system, boasting a 91.5% cleanliness rating, though its customer satisfaction rate is only 71%. But this isn’t so bad for a metro system that spans 79 stations and services over 302.5 million riders annually. The TTC also offers passengers air conditioning throughout stations and subway cars, bathroom access, and WiFi access.
The Copenhagen Metro in Denmark services over 120 million riders annually across 39 stations and earns its spot in the top three with a 97% cleanliness rating and 81% customer satisfaction rating. In addition to these high ratings, Copenhagen’s metro system also has air conditioning, access to WiFi, and bathroom accessibility, among other amenities.
Finally making it stateside, and perhaps a bit of a shocker, Philadelphia’s SEPTA Metro is the fourth most sleep-friendly metro system globally. Servicing 17.9 million riders annually across 286 stations, the SEPTA’s cleanliness and customer satisfaction ratings rank quite low compared to the top three metros, at 59.8% and 64%, respectively. While it also offers passengers air conditioning, bathroom accessibility, and WiFi access — its saving grace is the 81.25% on-time rate. This most definitely saves commuters from quite a bit of stress!
Rounding out the top five is Spain’s Metro Bilbao, which services nearly 92.4 million riders annually across 48 stations. With a 97.8% cleanliness rating and air conditioning, bathrooms, and WiFi accessible to passengers, it’s clear why it ranks so highly. Quality of life in Bilbao, Spain, also ranks highly, helping to solidify its metro in the top five.
Unsurprisingly, many of the world’s most widely recognized metro systems landed in the top 20 sleep-friendly metro systems, considering millions of passengers may find themselves trying to get some R&R while speeding through winding tunnels.
The 20 Least Sleep-Friendly Metro Rail Systems Worldwide
On the flip side, some metro systems offer little amenities for passengers to sit down and relax while whizzing down the tracks. Here are the least sleep-friendly metro systems:
The Turin Metro in Italy comes in as the No. 1 least sleep-friendly metro system globally, servicing 23 stations and offering passengers no air conditioning within stations and cars, no WiFi access, and no bathroom access according to our research. Additionally, each car is only able to seat 25, so weary passengers looking to take a seat and rest their legs have slim chances of doing so on the Turin Metro.
Georgia’s Tbilisi Metro ranks as the second least sleep-friendly metro system. Similarly to the Turin Metro, it also services 23 stations and fails to offer passengers any air conditioning, WiFi, or bathrooms while traveling to and fro. However, each car does have more than double the amount of seating compared to the Turin Metro.
Heading back to Italy, the Rome Metro rounds out the list of the top three least sleep-friendly metro systems globally. This metro services 73 stations and though it doesn’t offer passengers air conditioning within stations and cars, it does offer bathroom access and a seating capacity of 60 for tired passengers to take a rest. Overall, neither of these metro systems would be ideal to sleep on.
